Portstewart Presbyterian Church is mourning the loss of a much loved elder this week. Jimmy Jack was one of those instantly recognisable characters within the church. He was faithful at worship and was part of our praise band, the violin was never far from his hands. Jimmy loved music. He encouraged young people within the congregation to come and play their instruments, to use their talents.
Jimmy was passionate in promoting peace. When the Presbyterian Church in Ireland first introduced peace agents, Jimmy accepted this role with enthusiasm. He was key in setting up the churches friendship group, he advocated for what is now the annual travelling service, he was a key supporter of the Corrymeela Community.
Jimmy was ordained as an elder on the 20th May 2001 bringing his own unique problem solving attitude to our Kirk Session meetings. Jimmy was always more interested in finding the solution than dwelling on the problem.
Outside of the church Jimmy was supporter of the Alliance Party wearing out many a pair of shoes whilst on the campaign trial. He was a member of the Girona Orchestra always encouraging people to join and develop as musicians. He was a member of the local U3A.
My own personal memories of Jimmy are of a man who was determined to overcome whatever life threw at him. I will forever remember his determination as he struggled into church Sunday by Sunday, eyes fixed on making it to his seat without any help, and of course the violin tucked under his arm.
Jimmy’s funeral will be held in Portstewart Presbyterian Church today (Thursday 9th October) at 12 noon. Jimmy is survived by his wife Anne, daughters Sarah, Rebecca and Roisin as well as a much loved wider family circle.
